Occupational disease guitarists

In this article I want to touch on a very rare aspect of guitar playing, namely anatomical or medical, as you please. Let’s see what happens guitarists in the body during the game? What changes accumulate in our ligaments, muscles, bones and nerves, how to avoid diseases that can put an end to the career of even the coolest guitarist?

the Human hand is a very complex mechanism, created by millions of years of evolution, we have created all the material and spiritual values. The main purpose of the human hand is the implementation of well-differentiated exact sequential movements. The motor program is specified specialized motor areas of the cerebral cortex. Nerve impulses are transmitted and sent to the muscles of the hands along the nerve trunks. Numerous blood vessels provide all fabric brush with nutrients and oxygen.

Device brush can be divided into two main parts. It is based on a supporting frame, consisting of 27 small bones, sochinyayuschih their joints and connected by ligaments. The other part presents muscle-tendon apparatus providing mobility through numerous (about 30) muscles as the wrist and forearm. The smooth gliding of the tendons provide the mucous bag, serving as a sort of lubricant. The shape of the palm supports subcutaneous tendon plate. The protective cover of the brush forms the subcutaneous tissue and skin. The tips of the fingers secure the nail plates.

the above structure of the human hand is extremely simplistic. Those who wanted to study it more, I can recommend to contact anatomical health benefits. Professional music to create increased pressure on the brush. This in turn leads to the development of various diseases, violates the Constitution and the mobility of the hand. According to statistics worldwide, around 90% of musicians have occupational diseases. For brevity the most common ones are listed in the table:

DISEASE
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION
TREATMENT

Osteochondropathy bones of the wrist (death of part of the bone in chronic load)
Local (in the wrist area), you experience persistent pain, swelling, redness and limited mobility
Alternating periods of playing the instrument and recreation (for the accumulation of fatigue — exercises for relaxation brush)
Long (1-2 months) immobilization of the hand in plaster, medicamental therapy, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise, in severe cases, surgery (removal of the affected bone and prosthesis)

Deforming arthritis (joint disease in wear at high loads)
changing the shape of the finger joints, limiting their mobility, vicious installation of fingers in advanced cases
Alternating periods of playing the instrument and recreation (for the accumulation of fatigue — exercises for relaxation brush)
Medicamental treatment, massage, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercise, in severe cases, surgery (removal of the affected joint and prosthesis)

Stenosing ligaments (scar degeneration of the ligaments brush that infringe vessels, nerves and tendons)
the Disturbance of sensation, numbness, burning, tingling, limited mobility and vicious installation of the fingers
Alternating periods of playing the instrument and recreation (for the accumulation of fatigue — exercises for relaxation brush)
Medicamental treatment, massage, physiotherapy, in severe cases, surgery (dissection of the affected ligament)

Traiterously tentology.net, Preclusively bursitis (diseases of the mucous bags tendons associated with the violation of education lubrication)
In different cases: local pain, feeling of creaking or crunching sound when the movements of the fingers, enduring fatigue, malaise, muscle weakness
Individual selection mode static and dynamic loads while playing the instrument with the required periods of rest and relaxation hand
Local treatment: procaine blockade with hormones, taking multivitamins, physiotherapy, fixation with soft bandages. In severe cases, surgery (excision of the affected mucous bag)

Disease Dupuytren’s contracture (scar degeneration of the tendon plate palms)
Warp brush with fixed incorrect installation of the fingers in the position of flexion restriction of their mobility
Individual selection mode static and dynamic loads while playing the instrument with the required periods of rest and relaxation hand
In the initial stages — physical therapy, massage, physiotherapy. In the later stages of the operation (excision of tendon plate palms)

Hygroma (herniation of mucosa bags tendon)
Tumor (benign) thick elastic formation of small size round shape with clear contours in the area affected tendons
Exception trauma and excessive loads brushes
Typically, online — excision of hygroma and plastic walls of the mucous bag. Hygroma tend to re-appear in the same place even after surgery.

peripheral Neuropathy (disease of the nerves of the hands as a result of injury, strangulation, poisoning or infection)
Violation of the sensitivity and movement in the brush with «drying» muscles
Exception trauma and excessive loads of brush, preventing viral infections and poisoning (including alcohol)
Drug treatment, physiotherapy, massage, multivitamin.

Raynaud’s Disease (a disease of blood vessels brush in breach of their tone)
Attacks numbness, poslednee and cold fingers with impaired mobility
Limit the total stress load, auditory training, various intoxications (Smoking, alcohol, drugs)
Medication multivitamins, physiotherapy. In the later stages of the operation (the intersection of the nerves that regulate vascular tone in the brush)

Motor neuroses (apraxia is a disorder of the Central nervous system)
the loss of the ability to produce complex stereotypic movement of the brush (picking, tremolo, trills and other monotonous strokes and techniques)
Exception monotonous and repetitive practice, interleaving techniques of playing the instrument
Psychotherapy, medical treatment, Spa treatment

If you carefully analyze the third column, it will be obvious that almost all diseases of the hands of musicians happen due to excessive, constant loads. Practical training is a kind of sport, and fatigue of the muscles and ligaments leads to reduced efficiency of the brush. What can you recommend in order to avoid diseases?

1. Most importantly alternate lessons on the instrument with periods of rest. None, even the most healthy and trained hands will not withstand hours of practice without rest.

2. Try to diversify your practice, don’t focus on the same exercises. The monotony leads to the generation of incorrect movement patterns and consequently to a deterioration of performance.

3. Always try to play relaxed hands. Constantly tense muscles get tired quickly and fail, if they do not weaken and do not give to relax.

4. Maintain your physical form. Enjoy what may be the sport that are not associated with large loads on hands(swimming, football etc). Very soon you will see that a good physical shape will help to reach new heights in creativity and technique.

5. Along with sports maintain a healthy lifestyle, do not drink too much alcohol, abstain from drugs.
