Chord theory for guitar players. part 2.

Chord theory for guitar players. part 2.

As said the great guitarist Joe Pass – the simplest way to add interest to the game chords – to decorate their extensions and alterations. At first glance it sounds scary, but really all guitarists do it without even thinking. Here is a simple example – playing the battle of the D chord(D major) in the open position, not drawn if you do like this:

Item D
E —-2-3-2——————-
B —-3————————
G —-2————————
D —-0————————
A —-x————————-
E —-x————————-

Well? Get to know yourself? This is one of the most popular «jewels», played by the little finger, attained almost intuitively. And here’s another popular example. It can be heard in hundreds of songs:

Position Am
E —-0——0——0—————
B —-1——0——1—————
G —-2——2——2—————
D —-2——2——2—————
A —-0——0——0—————
E —-x——x—-x—————
I hope now it is clear that various additions and interesting things with chords not so far away as it seems. Explain the matter, and why in some cases they work, and in the other – no.

the Simplest chords consist of three sounds – the tonic, the third stage(third), and the fifth stage(Quint). From the third step determines whether the chord is major or minor. Look at these three sounds:

a(a-dur)
E —————————-
B ——————————
G ——————————
D ———-2——————
A —-0—4———————
E —————————-

Am(La minor)

E —————————-
B ——————————
G ——————————
D ———-2——————
A —-0—3———————
E —————————-

the Difference, at first glance, small. But if you play these chords in the usual way (5 strings), you will realize that the sound and the mood they are completely different. I will add that all the notes in these chords – this repetition of any of the three main notes, i.e. on 5 strings there are three main notes of the chord, while 2 of them are repeated (in octave). The law is simple – the more music is repeated, the more powerful sound of the chord. The more strings involved, the louder singing guitar.

so, if we add to these three notes one note (preferably on the top or in the middle register on the first 4 strings), then it will be called the extension – accord enhanced with additional sound and sounds different. If we change one of the major chord notes (except tonics, perhaps), it would be alteration – change triads. I will cite a few examples : chord, can, on the basis of them you will have your own ideas in this direction.

As you can see – visually, this all variations on the basic shape of the chords that we learned in the first article. As for using them in practice, we recommend to use the hearing in the first place. Feel good chord to a particular place or not. So you will develop hearing and faster all remember.

There is another point about which I would like to say – seventh chord. In General, from simple chords three forms, the most common – major chord, minor and seventh chord. It differs in that it consists of 4 sounds. To the basic triad added 7 level. Let’s see how it looks.

A7 (La-seven, or major seventh chord)

E —-0————————
B —-2————————
G —-0————————
D —-2————————
A —-0————————
E —-x————————

Am(La minor seven, or minor seventh chord)
E —-0————————
B —-1————————
G —-0————————
D —-2————————
A —-0————————
E —-x————————

Added the fourth note – on the third string. The rest part of the chord remains the same. And apply all sorts of jewelry just as you would with normal chords. It is simple, it is only necessary to enter into the spirit of the researcher, and try-try-try. The guitar attained in practice.

In the following article we will look at the composition of chords and play a few popular sequences.
