Chord theory for guitar players. part 1.

Knowledge of chords, playing chords, playing chords in the solo – this is a significant part of the guitar’s life. Probably even greater. Back in the 14th century in Europe, the inquisitors declared guitar instrument of unrighteousness; because that ’every adequate guy can be a musician with a guitar. This glory guitar obliged chords and accompaniment, which is relatively easy to learn in the basic forms. Some instruments can afford to create polyphony (chords) – in addition to the guitar and other plucked it except piano, xylophones and at worst bagpipe. Compare this with a huge variety of violins, horns and human voices and you will realize that the guitar has earned its popularity.

Many players, like myself, believe that the guitar needs to cut. Credit if you want. It really attracts attention and automatically puts your character ’virtuoso». Especially, if the passages are clean and rhythmically accurate. But because of the endless drills of different tunes and phrases there is a big gap in musicality – where these phrases, why are they in this place, is it possible to play them in another, can I write a good sentence? If the guitarist has an understanding of chords, harmony (chord sequence), then he will easily be able to determine what was happening, and it’s much better to focus on the work. Don’t forget to mention that knowledge of chords and chord diagrams improves hearing, you can easily navigate the fretboard and in life in General.

let’s start from the beginning. What is a chord? Music theory tells us that the chord – this consonance of three or more sounds. The consonance of the two sounds – the interval. But now is not it. If you take the guitar and play at the same time any three strings clamped on any frets – it will be a chord. Four or five or six strings – the same chord. In practice the chords most often used as accompaniment melodies – they played in a certain rhythm, create harmony – the sequence of chords that support the melody. Or, in other words, the melody is inextricably linked with chords, composing a whole.

guitar, unlike the piano, the musician while playing the chords should think not only about them but about the fingering. The Bane and salvation of all guitarists. On the one hand, fingering allows you to visually learn all the basic chords, put them on different frets, allowing you to easily change the pitch, and on the other, at an advanced level, the shortcomings of the tool does not make it easy to take many of inversion, some of the chords in General impossible to take!

the Same thing many will notice with tablature and sheet music. Tablature is a simple and visual, but only knowledge of music will allow you to achieve professional level. Of course, I’m not going to torture my readers, and all the examples are written in tablature.

And the first example will be associated with the concept of the 5 positions. For fingering facilities guitarists made up of 5 basic positions open chords, which are dancing all the other chords on the guitar, as well as ideas for solos.

Consider:

1. The position of La (Latin –)
E —-0————————
B —-2————————
G —-2————————
D —-2————————
A —-0————————
E —-x————————

This chord – La major, or A. note that the tablature read so – from top to bottom are the strings, starting from the most subtle(the first one)to the colon(the sixth). Figures – non frets, which must hold, zero mean open (nazarathy) string. The cross means that string is not played.

This is one of the most common positions, the first chord of many guitarists, Am (La minor), which looks like this:
E —-0————————
B —-1————————
G —-2————————
D —-2————————
A —-0————————
E —-x————————

It is in this position. Once again let me remind you the convenience of such system – if you need the B chord(b major), just take a Barre on the first fret and place the same visually, will play B. to play Bm(b minor), hold down the strings as shown in the second tab. At the third fret – C, fifth – D.

And all! And you don’t need no music theory! No books, build chords, pondering intervals. The guitar gives a relatively easy path to the chords, it should develop. Of course, we will focus on building chords, but in another article. And now let us return to the positions.

2. Position Mi (E)
E —-0————————
B —-0————————
G —-1————————
D —-2————————
A —-2————————
E —-0————————

most Likely, this is the second chord, which I had learnt many of the guitarists. Of those who actually taught the chords, of course…

3. Position Re (D)
E —-2————————
B —-3————————
G —-2————————
D —-0————————
A —-x————————
E —-x————————

Explain why some chords are crosses – it’s very simple. The lowest note of the chord should be (in most cases) its tonic – La for La-minor or major, PE for the PE major or minor. If the bottom is going to sound a different note, the chord changes, and, in these cases, you will see the dirt in the sound. Therefore better not to play – to stop, or not to offend.

4. Position (C)
E —-0————————
B —-1————————
G —-0————————
D —-2————————
A —-3————————
E —-x————————

5. The position of the Salt (G)
E —-3————————
B —-0————————
G —-0————————
D —-0————————
A —-2————————
E —-3————————

Thus, we examined the 5 basic positions open chords. A keen eye, you will see that all the other chords — change these basic positions, one way or another connected with them. I will say even more, most of the solo phrases are also associated with these positions, because they are built based on the sounds of the chord, so the knowledge of these items is mandatory for guitarists of all levels – from the kitchen of the singer, to the stadium of a professional. As homework I recommend to look at the basic versions of these chords(for example E this will be Em and E7)and understand how they differ, and how to do fingering.

In the following article I will write about the alterations and extensions – how to make the most simple chords more interesting, and to diversify your game. Good luck!
